Coming back to Metastorm BPM after trying out a few other BPMS products, I have only one thing to say:
Bugs.jpg
I'm afraid it's true. I guess I have just been so used to them, I had got to the point when I was just ignoring them. After being away for a while, they are really obvious.

Some that immediately irritated:

Changing the size of a role swim lane moves lower stages but not actions. Seriously, did no developer actually try that?

The contents of an editable grid are not stored in the database after the form save. Or the action commits. Or when the next stage starts. Seriously? This is 'expected behaviour' now?

Copying and pasting Visual Script Activities just fails, especially assignment activities (I never use them, but was doing so for a demo).

When I build a SelectSql() function to add up values in said editable grid, it returns nothing. No failure, just nothing. This is because you need to have a .Integer, or .Currency or whatever after the function. Then it SHOULD NOT SILENTLY FAIL!

Hidden grid columns stuff up the grid in IE 8. Still.

I know there are many more, and I know I'll be finding them all over again in the next few days. I have been a bit critical of a few other systems where they were not immediately intuitive. What I find now is that MBPM is much worse.

My biggest pain is that I still think MBPM is the best of the lot by quite a distance, but it will now probably never be fixed and reach its proper potential. What a damned waste.

I'm going to add these as I find them, just to ease my frustration!

The CPU goes into a 100% usage spin when a process is selected on XP. This only happens after a while, but once it has, you have to scrap that installation (uninstall and reinstall do not fix it).

  • Process Activator that cannot handle read-only fields on a form.
  • Process Activator that cannot handle fields in a form segment from a library.
The first is in both 9.2 and 9.3, the second in 9.3.  These are our two most recent, which have raise bug defects for when we reported the issues to them.
  • Another we have is performance for similar forms in V7 vs V9.  Things are our big forms in particular are take 2-3x longer to load.  (Our suspicion is since every object is an Infragistics control with its own overhead instead of "basic" text fields and the grids are DevExpress, for which we have 4 on our largest form.)

To follow up on what BMellert posted. The read only field gets created as an output param in the service.  Part of their logic checks to make sure an object get created and if null exists, all well and good except THE OUTPUT PARAM NEVER GETS SET.  So you can't even connect to the service that is created because it has a compilation error!  The work around is to fix the code the process activator creates.
