This is the third one now. I did one with 9.0.0, one with 9.0.0 HF1, and now one with 9.0.1. That's a hat trick for Metastorm!

The Designer won't start up at all. It starts the splash screen does its thing for a few minutes and then goes to 100% CPU and does nothing at all. Same MO each time.

This time it was caused by:
Saving a form
Loading it
Deleting all fields and variables
saving it as a template
Copying and pasting one field from the previous form
Clicking on a field in the toolbox.

At that point it stopped responding. From then on, it will not ever respond, not even a full uninstall, disk and registry clean, then a reinstall will make it work ever again.

I am pretty certain that will not reproduce it, just like the steps for the last one did not, although there were templates involved too:

All I did was save a form as a template, and then close the solution without saving. It hanged, so I shut it down. Now the splash screen hangs on starting up. No response at all.

Two of those machines were real ones. I've given up trying to get trashed version 9 installations to work again - I've spent way to much time on it. This one was virtual. After my last real one was trashed, I made a copy of my virtual one before carrying one.  All this one will cost me is a half-hour copying the old VM and setting up again, for a change.

I strongly recommend you do not install the Designer on any real machine. Only ever use it on a virtual machine, and make sure you keep copies. The Designer should come with some kind of PC health warning!

But should not be needed. :(

PS that's for V6/7 for V9 the problem is V9 at the moment ;)

Quick update: The VM I set up for reproducing at will last night - guess what happened? After setting the directory for the templates, it blew up. Never to be restarted ever again.

Done another - this one I did not do any setting at all on the Designer before copying. Seems OK.

Seriously, this is a ridiculous situation that has been going on since the early release, I think. I could reproduce this almost at will if I could be bothered. I need the time to prepare my virtual machines for copying, however!

Have you submitted an SR for this and if so, has the Help Desk been able to reproduce the issue?

They know about it. When it happens again I'll let them have the VM.

It's the *&^%$( templates! I had noted before that it almost always followed doing something with templates, and I was right on that, at least.

I could have sworn I had deleted them the first time round, but I must have forgotton the 'my documents' folder every time. I had just dragged up an old VM that had the problem and I tried to setrip it clean to make the VM smaller for transfer. In the process I Cleaned out the my documents folder.

I tried the Designer just to avoid looking daft when it worked first time for support (which it would have ;-]) and it worked!

Not only that, but I now get the panel layout touted for 9.0.1, which is actually quite a good space saver IMO (yet to see if I really like it).

A major relief as I can now stop using VMs and get some real performance out of my shiny new i7 quad processor. I might even learn to love the Expression Builder.....

[edit = offending templates attached]

Hi Jerome
I also have this problem after cancelling a deployment. My Designer just won't start.
Can you please give me more information as to how you remove the templates and which ones to remove to get Designer to work again? I am on Win 7 64 Bit.
Thank you!

They will be in the templates directory add set in the designer options. Any which have the same name but different extensions may cause this.

It was fixed since time ago however. I would look for temporary difficulties. Search here for the words to find the post on it.
