I have a fairly simple data entry form, driven by a loopback action to allow the user to fill out pieces of the form as required, saving for later completion.

I've found a couple of times now, users complaining that when going back into the form the information they entered earlier is gone.  I check the database table and nope, there's no data there.  Even fields marked as required are showing null.  How could that even happen?

Is there any hidden gotcha that I'm not aware of for loopback actions?  Could it be that if they leave the web page open for too long, their Metastorm connection will time out and they'll lose their work?

Most of our forms are filled out in loop back actions.
I suggest checking eLog for the folder (though you probably have already) just to make sure something else isn't going on.
(I'm also guessing this isn't consistent.  If it is, then might there be some other action which is changing things back?)

Nothing in the eLog unfortunately.  All I could see in there are the usual created and expired sessions for the user.

And yes, it doesn't appear to be consistent.

I might try setting it to "reopen folder" and see if that helps.

That looks pretty standard.  I presume eEvent shows the action being completed.

So my next guess ... are you sure the BOs on the form are pointed to the right BO (the XXXData I'm guessing) and that the fields are assigned those BOs instead of local or some other sort of variables?  Worse comes to worse, you could reassign the variables used on the form fields in case MBPM somehow lost that association, but I'd think a lot of errors or at least warnings would occur during validation.

Reopen folder shouldn't make a difference in this, nor if you switched stages, with perhaps an automatic conditional always returning to that stage, but you could try that just to see.  (I doubt that will make a difference, just trying to guess.)
